Mélanie Joly was first elected to the House of Commons in 2015 as the Member of Parliament for Ahuntsic‑Cartierville. She now serves Canada as the Minister of Industry and the Minister responsible for Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions.
The Honourable Mélanie Joly was first elected to the House of Commons in 2015 to represent the riding of Ahuntsic–Cartierville in Montreal. Since entering federal politics, she has held several key positions within the Canadian Cabinet, including Minister of Canadian Heritage, Minister of Tourism, Official Languages and La Francophonie, Minister of Economic Development and Official Languages, and Minister of Foreign Affairs. Since 2025, she has served as Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions.
Throughout her ministerial career, Minister Joly has contributed to promoting Canadian culture and strengthening the country's tourism sector. She has also played an important role in protecting and advancing Canada's two official languages, notably by advocating for the French language both across Canada and internationally. As Canada's chief diplomat, she championed Canadian interests abroad and led the government's response to several major geopolitical challenges. Today, she is focused on enhancing the competitiveness of the Canadian economy, attracting strategic investments, and supporting the growth of industries of the future.
Before entering federal politics, Mélanie Joly founded the municipal political party Vrai changement pour Montréal and ran for Mayor of Montreal in the 2013 municipal election.
A lawyer by training, Minister Joly holds a Bachelor of Laws with distinction from the Université de Montréal and a Master of Laws in European and Comparative Law from the University of Oxford. She is also the author of Changing the Rules of the Game, in which she outlines her vision for public policy and civic engagement. In recognition of her leadership, she was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum.
