Minister Joly travels to China and Japan to advance Canadian priorities and promote economic growth.

Mélanie Joly travelled to China and Japan from June 14 to 23, 2026, accompanied by the Prime Minister’s Parliamentary Secretary, the Honourable Kody Blois, to advance Canada’s priorities and promote economic growth.

During the visit, she participated in numerous meetings, including with Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao, to ensure Canada remains part of the conversation and to advance cooperation in clean technologies and the industries shaping tomorrow’s economy. She also met with Minister of Industry and Information Technology Li Lecheng for a productive discussion on Canada-China relations and the potential to build a mutually beneficial economic partnership.

In Japan, she met with Minister of State for Economic Security Kimi Onoda to deepen cooperation and strengthen shared interests between the two countries. During her meeting with Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi, responsible for Internal Affairs and Communications, she reaffirmed the mutual commitment of Canada and Japan and the strength of the alliance between the two nations. She also had the pleasure of reconnecting with her long-time friend Yoko Kamikawa, former Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan.
